WISCONSIN - The next five days could be one for the record books. A blizzard is expected to arrive tonight. A strong low pressure system will take a unique track across the Dakotas into Iowa, then curve towards the east through Illinois and Michigan. Heavy snow will fall north of the low pressure track across Wisconsin. Snow accumulations will exceed 12" in portions of southern Wisconsin with blowing and drifting snow. This will be an intense storm. Here are the latest details:

BLIZZARD TIMING

The snow will begin Sunday night in the west, overspreading all of Wisconsin on Monday morning. Snow will fall heavily in the morning across southern and central Wisconsin with snowfall rates of 1-2"/hr. Models suggest snow may remain heavier longer across portions of southern Wisconsin. The storm ends by 6PM Monday night.

Starting around 6PM in the west, snow develops quickly overnight across southern Wisconsin. Wind gusts increase to around 35MPH in eastern Wisconsin. Storm ends Monday night lingering in east central WI.

HEAVY SNOW - OFFICIAL SNOWFALL FORECAST

Major snow accumulations of 12-15" across portions of southern Wisconsin generally between Fond du Lac, Madison, and Milwaukee east to the lake Michigan shoreline. 8-12" across central Wisconsin from just south of Minneapolis eastward. 4-8" for Barron, Wausau, and Crivitz in northern Wisconsin - Hayward and Rhinelander in northern Wisconsin. 2-4" across the far north. It will be difficult to measure the snow due to drifting. Lake effect snow is expected across portions of Michigan.

WIND GUSTS & BLIZZARD CONDITIONS

For much of Wisconsin wind gusts of 30-40 MPH are expected. Wind direction will begin out of the east, then turn sharply out of the north during the day. It's going to be intense. The strongest winds will likely be located along the lake Michigan shoreline where gusts may reach 50 MPH. Therefore blizzard whiteout conditions are expected with blowing and drifting snow. Snow drifts of 1-3 feet in eastern Wisconsin. Travel will become near impossible on Monday for the hardest hit areas.

BRUTAL (record breaking?) COLD TO FOLLOW

On Monday, surface air temperatures will be in the single digits or teens during the storm for most. This contributes to high snow to liquid ratios and a dry snow that blows around easily. As the storm pulls away brutally cold temperatures will rush in, dropping to below -20°F by Tuesday night and lasting for an extended period of time. If storm clean up is your thing, salt & brine will become less effective on Tuesday. I highly recommend putting a solid effort into clean up Monday night.

Temperatures will dip to -20° & -30°F at times Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Remember this is the coldest time of year on average. These are records you do not want to break.

Wind chills dip into the -50 and -60F range by Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. This is the latest GFS forecast. Models have been in exceptional agreement.
